Just like cooking, when you want to make something amazing it’s the quality of the ingredients and where they come from that really counts. All the wonderful people below take the greatest care in producing remarkable products for us and at the same time working to protect the natural recourses within their industries. We are proud to be working along side them and we’d like to share their passion and dedication with you too.
Our beautiful cotton comes direct from a family owned company in India to minimising its carbon footprint. This wonderful company have recently been recognised as one of the most innovative independent eco textile manufactures, growing organic veg within their nursery by using the leftover organic dye batch as manure and fertiliser so nothing is wasted. They hold GOTS certification that ensures fairly paid jobs and conditions for their workers and they give back by funding NGOs working on Wildlife conservation project, Disable Care and Child Education.
It’s a pleasure to work with such an innovative and environmentally conscious company
All our ethically sourced wax comes from bee farmers who understand that the welfare of their bees is paramount to the wider environment, disturbing them as little as possible and providing the highest standards of care.
We source exclusively from British and European Bee Farmers and we are so excited that in the Spring of 2021 we hope to sponsor our own hives placed close to wildflower planting arears and cared for by a local organic honey company. How amazing is that!
All of our vegan waxes are GMO free and come from a prestigious British company which was founded almost 140 years ago.
Our blend is made in the UK and consists of sumac wax, sunflower meal, rice bran wax and hydrogenated castor oil.
Resin gives our wraps their unique grip factor, helping create a better seal for longer freshness.
As most other wraps companies use Pine Tree Resin, we too began by using it, but on further investigation we decided there were far too many ethical and health implications for us to continue using this ingredient.
Pine resin is known to cause allergies and adverse reactions and is regarded as a hazardous import in most countries. Even companies who claim sustainable farming of their resin cannot fully guarantee its provenance or its impact on deforestation so for these reasons we decided we must find a better option.
After extensive research we discovered Damar Resin which is derived from two trees named Shorea Dipterocarpaceae and Shorea Javanica. 95% of Damar tress are grown sustainably throughout Indonesia and for the local farmers Damar harvesting has become a great alternative to deforestation helping to keep the Javanese rainforests alive. Damar is also less brittle than pine resin producing a softer easier to use wrap that lasts longer with less cracking. Damar gum is also used as a food glazing agent and an additive in food with no know reactions of dermatitis or asthma symptoms as there have been with Pine resin. We are delighted with the switch to Damar and we are sure you will be too.
Our Jojoba Oil comes direct from source grown by a cooperative settlement in the heart of the Negev Desert in Israel. The oil is cold pressed from the seeds and is free of all additives and preservatives. It is certified organic, vegan, cruelty free and traceable from seed to oil. The plants are cultivated by a cooperative project owned by the local desert community and grown on reclaimed desert land with which they have a deep connection.
Sustainability and the environment are at the forefront of their operation. They plant to encourage local wildlife using recycled water in a drip irrigation system so that no water ever goes to waste and their plantation is powered by solar panels and turbines. The jojoba pulp after processing is even used as animal feed creating circular sustainability.
The beautiful dyes use throughout our manufacturing process are Azo-free low impact eco dyes or natural herbal dyes. These dyes require less water resources and are safe when in contact with humans and the environment. All our dyes comply with GOTS Certification and have passed the EU reach (EC) 1907/2006 regulation. They are also vibrant, bright and put a smile on our faces every day.
We carefully curate any product that we consider selling but for us Turtle Bags were top of our must have list, their passion and commitment shines through and inspired by turtles, these Turtle Bags are a practical reminder that plastic never goes away.
Way back in 2001 when plastic bags were still spilling off the end of our supermarket tills, Turtle Bags was established to raise awareness of the hazards of plastic bags and offer alternatives.
Plastic in our seas is a problem which is invisible to most of us in our daily lives but will be causing problems for many decades, disrupting food chains and suffocating sea life. Leatherback Turtles travel to British Waters looking for jellyfish. Sadly, they mistake our discarded plastic bags for their favourite food.
Together we can stop this happening.
Our amazing local printers have gone above and beyond to source the most environmentally sustainable packaging possible for us. Our packaging is all FSC certified and both GoodToBee and our printers are committed to buying most of our materials as locally as possible. It’s not just the materials that are assessed, but the packaging paper tape we use, all internal packaging and even the glue we use is vegan friendly. The inks used in our packaging are kind to the environment, low-impact and vegetable based. No VOC’s or nasty chemicals.
Packaging is not just about the materials, but sustainable design must be built in from the beginning. Therefore, we never include promotional cards, leaflets or instruction within our packaging, and everything is designed to be as minimal waste as possible. No outer sleeves or unnecessary leaflets – even if they are printed on FSC paper!
